The title of this compilation, "The Down Home Soul of Z.Z. Hill" is slightly misleading. When I think of "down home soul" of think of the gritty and soulful tunes recorded by southern R&B masters such as Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, George Jackson, and Wilson Pickett/5(7).

The Best of Z.Z. Hill presents one of the most triumphant and genuine comebacks of the early '80s. In retrospect, it does seem seamless, but in actuality, it wasn't. By the time he hit Malaco, Hill's persona was more defined. The grouchiness and selfishness had broadened and finally turned to trademark.
